He left after two years to engage himself with Lord John Scott-the similarity in names being a draw. He was engaged to Lord Scott until Scott's death 37 years later. He then worked for Lord Haddington after two years tying flies himself. In 1850 he devised something interesting , new, and taking which ostensibly made onboard a ship taking he and Lord Scott to Norway for a Salmon outing. Probably good for romantics, but untrue. However, it is the most famous, and most killing of flies. Some claim this to the first with Jungle Cock, but the Durham Ranger can be traced to 1846. It is however one of the true Classics. The two part body of yellow and black is copied in many others like Akroyd from Dee. There is a good obituary listing in Bates' "Art of the Salmon Fly," from the original Field newsletter. This fly and its derivatives are what modern salmon flies derived from. You can see this in hair wings, and its fully feather use in all parts of the world. Apparently the Salmon don't realize it is an 1850's creation! |
