The Silver Grey is a fly originated around 1850 by James Wright, who invented other notable flies such as the Black Ranger and Thunder and Lightning. The pattern is presented in various classic books. Blacker (1855) lists a "Silver Grey Fly", but as Frodin (1990) notes, this should not be considered the same fly, as the dressing is completely askew from Wright's description (or any other variation). Kelson commented that is was successful fly on all rivers, and Bates had noted its popularity among Canadian anglers. It resembles the Lady Amherst in respects, which is also a popular Canadian fly. The Silver Grey may be seen in a few modern fly catalogs in hairwing fashion.
